Overlooked questions to ask yourself before you buy a cat by Diane Mckenzie

Do You Have Room to care for a Cat? Provided your cat is able to get outdoors then you'll be pleased to know that they do not need too much space. Cats are good pets to keep if you live in apartments as long as it is possible for them to get outside when they wish to.

Do you plan to make changes to your home any time soon? If you are planning to move house or do home refurnishing anytime soon, then you need to question getting a cat at the moment. Cats can well adjust to change, but it is hard on them. In order to bond effectively with your cat, you need to give him or her a stable environment for at minimum of six months. If you are expecting major life changes to occur within the next twelve months, you may want to hold off on getting a cat.

Does anybody in your home have cat allergies? You might not have an allergy to cats, but are you certain that all of your other family members will be okay? If you or any of your household members are not sure if there is an allergy to cats, then you might want to spend some time at other people's homes where they have cats. However, with many of the allergy treatments available today, symptoms can be treated very easily with medication or with injections.

Will you cat become a fad for your kids? Children often get excited about the thought of owning a pet but lose interest once the novelty wears off. If your children suddenly seem interested in owning a pet then wait 3-12 months to see if they still maintain their enthusiasm. It is cruel and unfair to take care of any animal and then try to pass it off to somebody else once your pet gets taken for granted.

Cats make wonderful pets and if you feel able to address these questions then there is little stopping you and your family sharing many fun years together with a pet cat.
