Yorkies are a dog breed known for their beautiful, silky coats. In fact many people choose Yorkies for this reason. However, Yorkies require proper grooming to keep their elegant look.
The hair on Yorkies is very much like human hair. It doesn't shed much, and doesn't carry dander easily. This makes Yorkies a great choice for people who suffer from pet allergies.
It's easy for your Yorkies hair to get tangled and just plain dirty if left untouched. But all it takes is combing through it one time a day to keep it flowing and untangled. You should be sure to only use a soft comb to do this. Using ones with hard tips can hurt or damage your Yorkies delicate skin.
Just like all dogs, Yorkies need regular baths. You should bath your Yorkie with special shampoo and conditioner from the pet store made for small dogs. Simply use some warm water with a towel to clean your Yorkie. You should bath your Yorkie about once every other week, or when your Yorkie is obviously dirty.
Yorkies can buildup mucus arround their eyes which can lead to infections, or damaging their skin. Check their eyes daily, and if you see mucus, gently remove it with a wet towel.
Pay attention to your Yorkies teeth. Tarter buildup can cause dental problems if left untreated. If you see your Yorkies teeth are starting to develop tarter, ask your Veternarian to recommend a dental cleaning product for your Yorkie. There are many dental products at the pet store, but your Veternarian will know which one will work the best with your Yorkie.
You may not think it, but spending a few extra bucks on some premium dog food can make a bid difference in your Yorkies coat. Ask your Veternarian which dog food they would recommend for your Yorkie.
You should take your Yorkie to get professionaly groomed every once and a while. They will trim their hair properly, check for ear mites, clean them, and do some other things to them you probably don't want to do.
Grooming your Yorkie isn't a hassle if you schedule it out. Take a few minutes to decide when you will spend time grooming your Yorkie or taking them to get professionaly groomed. This will save you some time in the long run.
