Keeping your ferret properly nourished is a very important task of owning them. Unlike other animals, ferrets have a specific nutritional requirement that should be kept at all times. Naturally, their diet is mainly composed of the following: high meat based protein, high fats, and low fiber. As long as you maintain such a diet for your ferret, then you are sure that they are well taken care of in terms of their nutrition.
Aside from their usual meals, you can also provide them with snacks that can serve as additional treats for them. There are a lot of ferret snacks available in the market today so it may not be a difficult task for you to find one that will suit your pet ferret.
Just like their ordinary meals, it is also important that their snacks have the same nutritional value. This will help in their further development and also prevent them from acquiring diet related illnesses. Since ferrets are obligate carnivores, it is best not to feed them fruits, sugars or even cereals. Their anatomical make-up make them incapable of processing such materials and thus, when you feed them these, it may lead to digestive illnesses and even terminal ones.
For a healthy diet, you can provide your ferret with chicken or turkey baby food, at least a tablespoon a day. Since these foods are quite delicious for them, they can enjoy having it and even look forward of eating such foods for the following days. It may come as an advantage for you especially when he becomes sick since you can feed him this baby food and he will not resist it.
When an occasion comes that the food you are giving your pet is not already adequate for him, then it may be time for you to change snacks. However, in doing so, you must not change rapidly, rather slowly and gradually. Since ferrets have such delicate digestive systems, this means that any sudden change in their diet may generally be a bad thing. In changing snacks, what you can do is slowly introduce the new food in the old food as you decrease the amount of old food being given. This will mix the flavors of the two snacks which will make it easier for the ferret not to notice the difference.
Feeding your ferret snacks may be done together with his training. When he has done something good or has been neat in your house, then it will be your cue to give him his snacks. This will further let him realize that such actions will lead him to be fed and thus maintain such a habit.
Snacks are definitely fun to give to your pet ferrets. There are a lot of snacks available in the market today and they are quite affordable for purchase. Example of ferret snacks are chicken ferret treats, vitamin supplements, yogurt ferret treats, peanut butter treats and many more. Before availing such treats however, make sure that what you are getting have the right nutritional value for your ferret. As long as the ferret snacks are nutritious and you are giving your pet the much attention and care that he deserves, he will definitely be a happy ferret to be with.
